Australia 2050 - Collaborative Nation and City Building - Brian Haratsis

Australians Rock!

We have built this nation the best way we knew how, and when we didn’t know how, we bluffed it brilliantly. We haven’t done a bad job all in all; we have taken on innovative ideas, added hard work, used good old Aussie ingenuity and cunning, and since the 1950’s we have:

  • Built 5 out of 20 of the worlds most liveable cities
  • Increased Gross Domestic Product (GDP) consistently
  • Increased household wealth by 10.5% annually
  • Formally created a Native Title agreement with our indigenous peoples

We have achieved all this, in spite of 3 oil shocks, the Dot-Com crash, major recent conflicts including Iraq, Afghanistan and East Timor, the end of the Cold War followed by Russian ‘bankruptcy’, the Asian economic meltdown, the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) scare, the horror of 9/11, the worst recession in Australia since 1929, a Global Financial Crisis (GFC) and losing the ashes!

It isn’t all roses. The last economic boom delivered more jobs but higher house prices, with forty percent of Australians earning lower wages in real terms ... Many of our cities are congested, our public transport is under extreme pressure, economic growth is hampered by infrastructure restrictions and the liveability ranking of our cities is slipping.

Australia 2050 - Collaborative Nation and City Building is a heads up for planners, developers, nation and city builders that planning and provision for the future has not changed since federation, but Australia has.

Who are we? How did we get here and what can we learn from the past?............

What do you want in 2050?
What does Australia want?

To be able to watch test cricket at the SCG without my back aching to buggery, while drinking a full-strength beer which costs me less than $22 (current prices). I want to be able to then catch an underground metro train to my high density apartment, where I will turn on my 3-D TV with my voice, uttering to my robot wife that I desire a bottle of red, median-rare steak and a foot massage.

I will then muse to myself that iAustralia is pretty good place to be, as I listen to the ocean lap against my apartment in the Blue Mountains.

Better remote medical services. With an ageing population we will either all have to move to cities or medical services will have to come to us.

I want respect for culture. All culture. We are becoming more and more a global village. I hope that by 2050 we have learned to respect each others cultures and differences, and our place and responsibility in a world without boundaries.

I believe that Australia should stop allowing so many people from overseas. Why should they all of a sudden come here and demand things for their religions and beliefs, such as schools and prayer rooms in certain areas of Australia. If they are not happy with they way things are run here, why live here? Being only 17, part of Australian youth i believe there needs to be a strong decrease in this to prevent Australia from being over populated and also keeping the Australian atmosphere and culture alive. Why should we change our ways for those who chose to live here when this is our country. I dont believe in putting a sudden ban to all those who which to live in Australia but those who com

Decentralisation, with incentives for white-collar businesses to set up in smaller country towns, capital cities on higher water restrictions that rural food growing areas, more trains and less roads in capital and suburban areas with public transport that isn't only geared towards getting people into the city... that's a start.
